English 4583: Special Topics in World Literature in English
Instructor: Pranav Jani
Course Description: How have authors and artists from colonized places resisted the devastations of their land, their culture, and their sense of self? What are the different narrative and artistic forms they have developed? What is the place of nationalism in resistance literature? How can we look at colonialism – and various kinds of resistance – through an intersectional lens?
Using tools and methods from postcolonial studies and related fields, this class will examine literature from several regions that have experienced colonial rule, especially considering Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Ireland, and Palestine. We will learn critical terms and methods of reading that allow us to answer a number of questions about colonialism, nationalism, patriarchy, race, caste, class, and sexuality.
Students will be asked to participate actively in class: attending class, doing the reading, asking questions and raising debates, and defending arguments with evidence and with respect to all). Assignments include preparing an oral presentation, turning in weekly Carmen posts, a short midterm paper, and a final project.
